As anti-trans legislation and hostility escalate in the United States, a group of dads gather from around the country for a retreat, in search of healing and a respite in nature as they build a nascent movement to support their trans and gender expansive kids. The dads are forced to make an impossible choice: stay and fight or flee their country.

Inspired by the 2023 Emmy Award-winning short documentary of the same name, The Dads chronicles fathers of trans and nonbinary children as they are forced to choose between country and family when a new ultra right-wing Presidential administration and conservative Supreme Court take hold in the United States.

Filmed over the course of a turbulent and historic year, this frank and moving documentary documents the emotional heft of events such as simple family retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, passionate protests against anti-trans oppression, exciting and celebratory family milestones, a life-changing United States Supreme Court decision, and the overall, on-purpose collapse of gender-affirming care for youth in America. The Dads captures a previously unimagined shift, exploring this national reckoning with remarkable intimacy through vérité footage and emotion-ridden interviews with the film’s main protagonists. This is the story of fatherhood as an act of radical resistance.
