A revealing, tightly wound drama hailing from Romania, POPPY FIELD is the study of one man’s struggle for self-acceptance in the face of losing everything he has.
Cristi, a young, gay police officer in Bucharest, is visited by his long-distance boyfriend, and they plan to spend a romantic weekend together. Their time is cut short, however, when Cristi and his fellow officers are called in to quell a protest that has erupted at a local art-house movie theater, where a religious group has disrupted the screening of a gay film. Tensions mount between the homophobic protestors and the audience, and Cristi, closeted at work, struggles to save face. When an old fling recognizes Cristi in the crowd, he is thrown into crisis, leading to a violent outburst and causing his macho façade to start to crack.
Based on true events, POPPY FIELD takes an unflinching look at the pressures of the closet and the compromises of conformity.
